Lakeside Plots

The days had stretched long while Jack, Phillip, and Cleo, not only healed their wounds, but also refueled their spend Ki. Their second day hadn’t been so bad for the group had healed their wounds and the McBannons brothers had dropped by for a large poker game. Pizza and shots, mixed with craft ales and Jack got some much needed R and R. It did his soul good to be able to relax as a normal person, even if his guilt still ate at the back of his mind. It didn’t surprise him much when Cleo and Phillip won most of everyone’s money.

White's Pond
White’s Pond

On the third morning, the trio of Stalwarts gathered to meet before they headed back into the dark city. They had all agreed that a gear-up run should occur before they reached the city, but other issues proved more complex.

 Cleo

Phillip and Cleo sat around the remains of the poker game sipping coffee while Jack paced around the room downing can after can of Mountain Dew.

Jack broke the building silence. “I would think the first thing we need to do is contact the other Stalwarts that hopefully are still with us.”

“I contacted Blaze, through Email,” Phillip said. “He’s still kicking. He has a secure site base that’s spread over the web so he can’t be tracked.” Phillip looked up from his steaming cup and met Jack’s eyes. “But he did a little net-running for us and told me that our cells, and such, are tapped. He said that if we need to contact anyone a face to face would be safer. At least that way they won’t know we’re coming as quickly, but he also said that he thinks Lanna and Felix are being watched.”

“Well at least that means they are still alive.”

Cleo spoke up. “They have probably been left alive so they can be used as bait to catch us. We killed a bucket load of Xemmoni. I’m sure we hit number one on their shit list, real quick.”

Dead Wood

“Let’s table them for now,” Jack said. “Whether we get more help or not, we need to think about our chief goals.”

“Which are?” Cleo asked.

“My gut reaction is to do what they’re trying to do to us, to them.”

Phillip made a face. “You want the three of us to try to make Boston Xemmoni free?”
Jack stared back at him. “Yes. I’m not as worried as much about some random Selector living in a sewer as much as the real members of Vile’s crew.”

Phillip massaged his forehead. “Now I know we kicked some serious ass out there, but those were low level thugs that couldn’t pierce our Damage Protection well. But if we go up against that same amount of powerful Xemmoni they can disperse our flesh to the winds before we get within thirty feet of them.”

“I am aware of this. That’s why I don’t intend to fight fair. What if we head in, ambush a few of the bastards, and then escape the city before sunrise.”
Cleo spoke up. “I see a few problems with that plan. Firstly, we won’t be able to come back here or everyone here will end up dead.”

“Agreed.”

“Secondly, the Darcarre are huge in Boston and then can sense Stalwarts better than any other race of Xemmoni and for that matter there’s some evidence that Glooms are the runners up for this skill. Surprising these guys is just this side of impossible.”

“And, if I might add,” Phillip said. “If we’re fleeing we have to get past their range or then can just follow us wherever we go.”

“They might think differently when they see where I take them.”

The Dionysus worshippers eyed each other.

Jack smiled. “When I said I wouldn’t fight fair, I meant it. We have all the cards stacked against us, so screw these pricks. I’m not saying we will wipe out the whole city before they get wise, but the first few times I want these Darcarre and they allies to follow us out of the city. It will be the last thing they ever do.”

What Waits in the Wood
What Waits in the Wood

“Whittling down their numbers wouldn’t be the worst idea,” Phillip said.

Cleo looked at Phillip and then Jack. “This idea only seems appropriate if this is what we’re really trying to do. Are we really going to try to take back Boston?”

Jack answered her. “I know no city can ever be completely Xemmoni free, but we can make this city too costly for Darken. Besides if he’s trying something big in Boston, we can at least make sure he won’t be able to do it on our world. We owe it to… well our other selves.”

Phillip downed his coffee. “Okay, I’m in. What the hell. It’s my city and no one kicks me out of my home.”

Cleo drew a deep breath. “You know you’re both nuts right?” She paused. “Okay, count me in too. Everyone has to die sometime.”

Snowed In

Jack sat in the small living room of the lake side house and watched the snow cover the earth in silent white blanket. For once he hadn’t argued when his Dionysian allies had suggested they stay an extra day in the rural outskirts of Concord. It would be good to start their next step at full strength, but he worried they could end up getting snowed in.

White's Pond
White’s Pond

This didn’t seem to be a concern with Phillip as he sipped on an ale and channel surfed like a pro. There had been some concern over whose bed Cleo would share or if she’d chose either of theirs and make one of the men sleep on the floor. Jack couldn’t have answered whether he felt disappointed or relieved when she chose her former boyfriend Phillip over him. She was a beautiful woman, but Jack could also use the rest.

The owner, one James McBannon, turned out to be a man of Yig, which had surprised Jack, but he had barely gotten a chance to speak to the man. James had married and chose to leave both the Stalwart life and the city behind. He had only stopped by long enough to let the small group in before rushing back to western Massachusetts to be with his growing family. Even though Jack knew they could use the help, he didn’t have the heart to press the man to risk leaving his family fatherless.

Such thoughts lead him back to the few Stalwarts they had left behind in Boston. Sure, most of them had been given a chance to either flee or join them fighting back, but besides Cleo, none of the others had done either.

Cleo was in the shower, so Jack sat in a large chair that faced the television. He took a long sip off his own ale before asking, “So have you tried to contact the Stalwarts we left behind?”

“Blaze emailed me,” Phillip said without moving his eyes away from the rapidly changing screen. “So I guess he still lives. I suppose we’ll find out how right Lanna and Felix were about them having nothing to fear from this Xemmoni ultimatum.”

“It could be possible that we did enough damage to them that they’re licking their wounds for a few days like us and this storm could help settle things too.”

Phillip looked over and smiled. “We did do a pretty good number on them, huh? What, we waxed about fourteen on those Dark Alliance bastards.”

Darcarre

“I thought it was fifteen,” Jack said.

“You must be counting the Hyades.”

“Well, I did decapitate him.”

“That doesn’t always work, with them,” Phillip said while taking a long pull.

“We’ll see, but what should we be doing now? We can’t stay here forever.”

Phillip looked back at the TV. “I wish we could. This New London Pizza is the best I’ve ever tasted.”

Jack leaned forward. “I think we need to discuss something else.” When Phillip didn’t reply, he went on. “I think we need to figure out why the Xemmoni want Boston and what they intend to do with it.”

“Xemmoni want well… everything, don’t they?”

“Yes, but I have a feeling this is different. Isn’t there some evidence that Darken and bunch of his villains, and even we, are associated with Boston on multiple worlds?”

Thoughtful Jack
Thoughtful Jack

“I try not to think about those things. The dreams are bad enough.” Phillip looked at his beer, the television, and the falling snow, anywhere but toward Jack.

“Maybe since Boston has been so damaged on this world, Vile is trying to use our Boston to create some effect that could damage multiple worlds. It’s the type of thing he might try to do. And if he does, we would be the weak link letting every other world battling for survival down. If multiple worlds are robbed of their heroes, then it could cost us the whole war.”

Phillip finally looked his way. “You have quite the imagination.”

Cleo walked into the room wearing nothing but a towel and a serious expression. “He does, but the sad thing is… he’s right.”

Darkness, Death, and Corruption

The three Stalwarts moved into a back to back formation as the nine Xemmoni that surrounded them drew in closer. Cleo addressed Phillip, “It always was a ball of fun every time we got together.”

Alley of Doom
Alley of Doom

“I like to show a girl a good time,” he tried to joke but his words sounded tense and strained.

Jack stayed focused. “How do you want to work this? I’d just assume try my hand at that Hyades bastard again.”

“Be my guest,” Cleo said, “I’ll take the Darcarre.”

“Oh great,” Phillip groaned. “That means I have to take on all six Caradon!”

“We’ll back you up as soon as we can,” Jack shouted and then rushed toward the armored Hyades. The attack began with two tossed throwing knives. The Xemmoni batted one aside with his oversized machete and the second tinged harmlessly off its armored shoulder.

 444444

“Not the greatest start I’ve ever had,” he said, under his breath, as he raced toward the villain. The Hyades prepared for the charge, but Jack wouldn’t give him that satisfaction. At the last moment, he veered to the man’s left. A swing just missed his ear and he dodged through.

Jack’s weaponless hands locked onto the thing’s left arm and he tried to swing it off balance, but he might as well be trying to push-start a semi. The Hyades didn’t budge. Instead he grabbed Jack’s wrist and heaved him forward. Jack tumbled ass over elbow as he hit the icy pavement. The Xemmoni moved in to take advantage of the situation.

As Jack struggled to his hands and knees, his hands found themselves slipping through a small patch of snow, but this gave him an idea. He waited until the Xemmoni was almost upon him. During his wait, he heard the shouts and cries as his allies took on a far superior number behind him and he knew he needed to aid him as quickly as he could. But this Hyades had already beaten him once and that was when Jack was at full power, not drained of his both physical and mystical strength as he currently was.

At the last moment, Jack dove to his left. The machete made a dull clang as it hit the pavement behind him. Moving quickly, Jack regained his footing and rushed behind the Xemmoni. Snow filled his hands and he slammed the snow into the eye holes in the man’s helmet.

It swung at him wide and missed, but its free hand already clawed at the snow that obscured its vision. Jack used this time to snatch away one of the machetes the Xemmoni had built into its leg armor. The fiend hesitated as it cleared more of the snow away.

Jack picked his target, saw a weakness around the Hyades neck, and then swung. He gave out a woop as the villain was decapitated. Before the head had landed, Jack had already rushed toward his allies.

Cleo fought the two Darcarre using twin short swords. She held her own and would have probably triumphed, but they didn’t have the time to find out. Jack decapitated his second Xemmoni as he ran past, but didn’t slow his pace as he rushed toward Phillip. Phillip had dropped two of the Caradon, but the remaining four looked like they were about to drop him.

 44444

The hurled machete took one of the Caradon in the back and it fell with a groan. He kicked another in the face and it stumbled back as Jack drew the sledge hammer off his back. Then it was go time. He didn’t remember how many swings it took, but before long Cleo had joined the two panting and bleeding men as they wavered over the mangled bodies of their foes.

 4444

“Search them for keys,” Phillip said as he leaned against the van with one hand. “We need to get our asses out of here.”

“I think they’re still in the ignition, dumb ass,” Cleo said with a smirk. Turning toward Jack she added, “Nice fighting by the way.”

“What him,” Phillip complained. “I took on six by myself. That guy with the blue jacket isn’t dead. I saved one for questioning.”

“Good, because we need to bail. We’re all spent and just this side of death’s door,” Jack said. “I guess in the end the Xemmoni won, because we will have to leave Boston before sundown.”

“It’s okay,” Phillip said. “We need to recoup. I have some allies in Concord that can put us up and at least let us recharge before we fight the leaders of these droogs.”

“Sounds good,” Jack began, but then his words caught in his throat. “Where… did that Hyades go?”

As one they all looked back the way they had come and besides a pool of blood deep enough to drown a rat, no sign of the armored Hyades remained.

As the Doom Continues to Loom

Jack managed to find a clean shirt before he and Phillip entered the trendy coffee shop. Phillip had an extra trench coat in his truck. When Jack had looked surprised by this, his fellow Stalwart had just shrugged.

Bladed Jack
Bladed Jack

Feeling like a Viking at a quilt convention, Jack inwardly winced when most of the eyes in the joint took them in. College students mixed with artists and other fashion conscious youth. Everyone looked like they tried so hard to be an individual they had become part of a counter culture that made them all appear the same or at least belong together.

 3

Jack caught an odd movement out of the corner of his eye. When he looked, he saw a security camera, mounted high on the wall, following them as they moved. Its lens glared like an angry red eye and Jack jerked when Phillip’s cell phone buzzed.

Gazing down, Phillip said. “I got a text. It tells me to go open the lap top… Oh there it is in the corner table.”

“Someone just left a lap top here?” Jack said, but then followed Phillip to the corner booth. His aching muscles were more than happy to take a load off and he collapsed in the booth so hard it creaked loud enough for two young college girls to glare at them before returning to what could have been their homework, but was probably Facebook or Twitter.

With a sigh, Phillip pushed the computer to the wall and then opened it so they could both see it. It flared to life humming for a moment before the image of an exploding fireball filled the screen. This transformed into a cyber image that was half machine and half metal. “Always a show off,” Phillip muttered.

 33

“I heard that,” a young voice chirped from out of the device. Seconds later, a thin faced man with blinding red hair appeared on the scene. “So Phillip we met again.”

“In the loosest sense,” He said. “This is my friend Jack. He’s a man of Yig.”

“I could have guessed that, I think. Now what’s so urgent? I’m a very busy man and have a meeting with some folks from Germany in a few minutes.”

“Oh nothing important,” Phillip started, “it’s just that the Dark Alliance Xemmoni have given all Stalwarts until sunset to leave Boston. After that, they state we will be hunted down and destroyed.”

Jack held up one of his wounded arms. “And they even started a little early with us.”

Blaze looked more serious than they others they had told. “Well that isn’t good. I doubt they could find me, but even I like to head out of the town once in a while. It might become a little boring being the only Stalwart in Boston.”

“And dangerous,” Jack couldn’t help but add.

His eyes glanced as Jack, but then addressed Phillip. “So what is your plan? Do you intend to fight or flee?”

The two men looked at each other, but it was Jack who spoke first. “I think we need to fight. Besides the obvious reasons, we feel that Boston will be used for a tool to cause a greater evil.”

“And this evil will be?”

Phillip answered. “We aren’t sure about that one yet.”

“And you want me to help you in this vague notion of fighting back, against impossible numbers, I might add, because they could be planning something worse than just simply abusing Boston.”

“Either that or just give you a warning so you have the option to leave,” Phillip said, losing his energy.

“I take it no one else has joined your fellowship?” The tinny voice asked.

“Not yet,” Phillip answered, but we did warn Lanna and Felix.

“And Lanna thinks her looks will keep her safe and Felix’s believes his indiscriminate healing will protect him.”

“And I’m sure that your ability to hide will have you thinking that you are safe,” Jack had to add.

Phillip shot him an angry look, but it was Blaze that answered. “Yes, most likely it would. But I’m not one to ignore bad tiding and hope for the best.”

“So you will aid us?” Phillip asked.

“Yes not in the manner you might expect. Phillip take this lap top and continue to warn the others. There are some things I will look into. I’m a better net runner than fighter in most cases. Warn the others and I’ll be back in contact with you soon.”

The image disappeared.

“That was better than the last two,” Jack said

“Maybe, but now we need to find, oh wait, looks like one of them found us.”

Three Tires and a Broken Axle

This serial starts 10/25/13

If anything the roads of Tucson looked worse off than her school. Multiple car pile ups had already occurred or happened right in front of their eyes. Mad man, and the people running from them, sprinted across the street going in every direction.

a

“This is like a video game from Hell,” Vance yelled as he swerved around a shirtless man with a chest painted with blood.
He cased an older woman and Mar cringed when the older woman’s scream let them all know she had been caught. “Where are we going?” She cried out. “Don’t drive near campus, it might be worse around there.”
But it was too late. Vance had taken Sixth Street, which cuts just south of the University of Arizona. Students were rushing south across the street in droves. In some cases they were a hundred thick. Most sprinted like normal people, but often, in their midst, screams echoed between the tall buildings as a few of the bloody ones would enter their crowds.
“Get out of the way!” Vance yelled and then hit two young female students. They bounced off the hood of the SUV with startled cries.
“Dude!” Phil yelled. “Get on a fucking side road.”
“Screw that, we just need to get through this.”
But after Vance hit three more students, Phil grabbed at the wheel.
“Let go, you moron.”
“I’m not going to let you hit anyone else, you could be killing them!”
“Look out!” Cindy screamed.
Then Mar saw it too. A UPS truck had flipped onto its side and they headed straight for it. She had time to toss on her seatbelt and brace herself and then they collided. Vance had been going at least fifty and they hit hard.
Mar and Cindy had put on their seatbelts, but Jenny had forgotten to and went flying forward. Her head connected with Vance’s with a loud smack and they both went limp. Phil’s head bounced forward, right as the air bag smashed into him. A string of blood from somewhere made a diagonal line across Mar’s face.
A daze claimed her and for an indeterminable moment she watched the stream of yelling college students swarm pass.
Cindy voice grounded her and pulled her back to reality. “Mar are you okay? Jenny and Vance are hurt bad and Phil’s not waking up.”
“I’m okay,” she said, while wiping at her face. Her hand came back in a smear of red. “We need to get out of this car.”
Looking outside, she saw that the college students grew fewer and in their place more of the stumbling bloody figures could be seen. “We need to get out now.” She was surprised when he door opened as easily as it did and she rolled out and dropped onto all fours on the ground, just trying to catch her breath.
Cindy didn’t let her rest long. “Mary, my door won’t open. I’m stuck. Please help me!”
Mar made it to her feet right as a blood covered student in just his underwear stumbled at her. He grabbed a handful of her hair and she screamed when several strands were pulled out. She raced to the other side of the car. Cindy still fought with the door, while the other three high school students still balanced, unmoving, on a jumble of airbags.

aaa

Underwear boy growled and he moved for her again. Her eyes dazed left and right. They had crashed close to the front of a Greek Restaurant. Their sidewalk sign was held in place by a cinder block. Without thinking, she grabbed up the block and threw it into the freak chasing her. She wasn’t sure if her fury took over or if blind luck guided her hand, but the cinder block smashed underwear boy in the middle of the face and her went down hard and thankfully didn’t get back up.
Cindy still banged on her window.
Once she was sure underwear boy wasn’t moving. She grabbed up the broken cinder block and rushed back to Cindy’s window. “Get back. Cover your eyes.” Then, without looking to see if her friend had complied, she threw the cinder block at the window.
It shattered on the first try and sent small squares of glass raining down upon Cindy. Her friend didn’t care and rushed out of the window frame like the car was on fire.
Mar helped her best friend to her feet and then asked, “What about the others?”
“None of them are moving.”
She was distracted for a minute by the sight of seven sorority girls running back them. Waves of blonde followed their flight as did two stumbling figures. “Well we can’t just leave them here with the window broken out.” But even as these words left her mouth, Mar saw that the wild press of students was over and on the other side of the road nothing moved except dozens of the lumbering things. A few students fought here and there, but they were being dragged to the ground and torn apart.

aa

“We need to get Jenny,” Mar said and leaned into the car and grabbed both of her friend’s ankles. She wasn’t strong enough. “Grab my waist and pull me.” She looked through the door she had left open and saw the few of them stumble into the street.
Cindy yelped and then pulled with impossible strength They got Jenny into the back seat and then with both of them working they got her to the ground outside of the car.
“How can we escape those while carrying her?” Cindy asked. “We have to go. We have to go now!”
“What about Phil?” Mar asked, but as she did, Vance’s eyes snapped open and be began to thrash against the air bags. He looked over at them and growled. Then, as if noticing Phil for the first time, he leaned sideways and took a huge bite out of Phil’s neck.
Both the girls screamed.
Then two big figures were upon them. Mar went to scream again, until she saw that it was three, no wait, four male college students.
“What are you standing here for?” A tall man with quite a good sized beer belly asked.
“Our friend is hurt,” Mar said, still in shock and cringing as Vance devoured his former best friend.
“This her?” the tallest one said, then without asked permission, he tossed Jenny over his back and yelled, “let’s go.”
“You heard the man,” the curly headed student said and as one the group began to jog to the south.
